Hanging Brake Caliper: What Causes It?

You might have a sticky calliper for a variety of reasons. The most prevalent reasons are shown below. Knowing how to deal with a jammed calliper and other brake issues, on the other hand, can help you face the situation with confidence.

Calliper Slides – owing to a lack of lubrication, corrosion, or debris build-up, the slides in the calliper might freeze. The brake calliper assembly becomes stuck when the calliper cannot glide in or out correctly. It’s crucial to use a full-synthetic lubricant since it won’t dry out like a non-synthetic grease and will minimise binding with age.

To travel correctly in and out of the calliper bracket, the slides must be greased. They have protective rubber boots that keep the lubricant in place, but with time, these rubber boots can age, dry up, and break, enabling rust and debris to get in. This causes them to cease sliding properly, causing your brakes to stick or fail to fully activate.

Calliper Piston – The piston is encased in a rubber boot. The piston is protected by this boot from dirt and filth. When the piston is withdrawn back into the calliper with unsuitable equipment, the boot might be damaged. Rust and other particles begin to accumulate after this is torn. This prevents the piston from moving freely.

Brake Hose – Brake hoses deteriorate with time. A little bit of the hose may break off as a result of this, and a portion of the hose may stay attached. Depending on how the hose fails, it may act as a valve, allowing the brake fluid to flow in one direction but not the other. In other words, when you press down on the brake pedal, the fluid may flow to the pistons and engage the pads, but it is unable to return to the master cylinder when you let off.

The following are some indicators of a hanging brake calliper, regardless of the cause:

  • It’s as though the parking brake is engaged.
  • the vehicle swerves to one side.
  • The scent of a burning brake
  • Squealing brakes
  • Hard pedal

HOW MUCH DOES A BRAKE CALIPER REPAIR COST?

If your brake calliper is hanging, you’ll need to figure out what’s causing it before deciding on a solution. Because there might be a variety of causes for the worry, a professional examination is required before a precise estimate can be supplied.

First, we must rule out the possibility that your brake pads are the source of the vehicle’s problems. You don’t need new callipers if the problem is only with the pads. Furthermore, if the problem is caused by debris or build-up, we can usually clean the callipers and get them back in working order.

The sooner you have it assessed and repaired, like with many other automotive problems, the less likely you are to damage other components and suffer additional costly repairs. Ignoring an issue usually leads to more expensive repairs in the long run.
